There's a river that's deep and wide But at times it's almost dry It just depends on where you try to cross It's a raging roaring river It's a cool mountain stream It's a river that's caused many men a loss When the headwaters roll The river starts to flow Through Santa Fe and on through El Paso Through a place we call Big Bend It's carved a path down low Separating Texas and Mexico Roll on Rio Grande Roll on, Roll on Roll on Rio Grande, Roll on Roll River Roll In the western days of old Sometimes the outlaws rode To try to beat the law to Mexico Sometimes the outlaws won And made it to dry land But sometimes a life was claimed by the Rio Grande Many people have been lost And the coyotes cost In the illegal cross to El Norte I see a mother lose Her son And the man that leaves His wife To cross in the night in search of a better life To cross in the night in search of a better life
