Lyrics

I knew this girl named Mary when she was really young
And I still knew Mary when she had a son
Something didn't seem right about either one of them
I felt uncomfortable around her husband
Mary always seemed really depressed
Her hair was a mess, she always seemed stressed
I saw her one day in a bloodstained dress
Her husband was abusive, it was obvious
Mary and her husband kept me up a lot of nights
Screaming and hitting, I'd always hear the fights
Sometimes the police would come and take him away
But Mary'd go and pick him up the very next day
He'd say that he was sorry, it wouldn't happen again
He was all she had, she'd lost all her friends
Then he'd beat her up and it would happen again
The cycle of abuse was never gonna end
One day, a change gon' come
One day, I'll be free
The fights got worse, her face was always bruised
He'd throw her on the ground and kick her with his shoes
Mary tried to leave, but she didn't have the money
Mary tried to leave, but she didn't have a family
Mary tried to leave, but he'd take away the keys
And when he tracked her down, he'd really make her bleed
She got restraining orders and moved into a shelter
Wherever she would hide, he'd always seem to find her
He made it very clear that he wouldn't let her leave him
No matter what she did, she just couldn't win
If she had the money, she said she'd move across the country
But she never made enough, she wasn't that lucky
Her son would see it all, he was fucked up
It wasn't just Mary, he'd also get beat up
Her son almost died a couple of times
She felt scared and powerless, I could see it in her eyes
One day, a change gon' come
One day, I'll be free
Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse
I couldn't believe what happened on the night of March 1st
I heard them in the house fighting real bad
Mary ran out, it looked like she had been stabbed
He threw her on the ground and beat her with a bat
Left her for a minute, then he came right back
She was begging him for mercy, but he just wouldn't stop
As he went to swing again, I heard a gunshot
I ran out of my house, Mary started crying
Her husband's on the ground, slowly dying
She had no other choice, it was kill or be killed
But the cops said it was her own free will
They heard her whole story, but they just didn't care
She looked at them numb with a really blank stare
Mary shouldn't be here, it's just not fair
Mary died today in the electric chair
One day, a change gon' come
One day, I'll be free
I'll be free
I'll be free
I'll be free
I am free
