Lyrics

Now Windy Bill was a Texas man and he could rope, you bet
Steer old Windy couldn't rope, you hadn't met him yet
But the boys they talked of a little
Black steer, kind of an old outlaw
Who lived way down in the bottom at the foot of a rocky draw
Now the little black steer had stood
His ground with punches from everywhere
And the boys bet Windy two to one that he couldn't quite get there
So he ropes on his top rope horses, withers and back were raw
And prepares to tackle the little
Black brute that lived down in the draw
With his Sam Slick tree and his Brazos
Bit and his taps and chaps to boot
And his old McGee tied hard and fast, Bill goes to tackle the brute
Well the little rope horse saunters round till the beast begins to paw
He sticks his tail straight up in the
Air and he heads down through the draw
Well the little rope horse went after him like he'd been eating corn
And Bill he piles the old McGee around the black steer's horns
Well the little rope horse stops stock
Still and the cinch is broke like straw
And the old McGee and the Sam Slick tree go drifting down the draw
Now Bill he landed in an old rock pile
And his face and his hands were scratched
Said he could always rope a steer but he guessed he'd met his match
So he pays his bets like a little man without an old bit of jaw
And allows the black steer was the boss of everything in that draw
Well the moral of this story, boys, is very plain to see
When you go out to rope a steer don't tie hard your McGee
But take your dallies like a man to the California law
And you won't see your empire go drifting down the draw
