Lyrics

I painted every wall a color someone else preferred
I learned to speak in frequencies designed to not disturb
I wore the version of myself that kept the peace at night
And called it living, called it love, and called it getting it right
I built a house of careful words and rooms no one could see
And somewhere in the architecture I forgot that I was free
The blueprints were all borrowed, all the corners filled with doubt
Until I couldn't tell the building from the one I'd locked inside
It held for so long
It held for so long
I almost believed the walls were me
Everything I built is coming down
Every careful brick, every hollow sound
I am not the shape I forced myself to keep
I am what was always underneath
Everything I built was not for me
Every door I locked, every borrowed key
I don't know yet who I find in the wreckage here
But she was waiting, she's been waiting
All these years
I used to count the things I gave and wonder why it hurt
To be the one who held it all and still came out the worst
The problem wasn't giving, I would give down to the bone
The problem was I never knew what I was giving from
There's a version of me buried under years of being good
Who never asked for anything and always understood
She learned to make herself so small the walls would never crack
And I have been dismantling her, and I want her back
Everything I built is coming down
Every careful brick, every hollow sound
I am not the shape I forced myself to keep
I am what was always underneath
Everything I built was not for me
Every door I locked, every borrowed key
I don't know yet who I find in the wreckage here
But she was waiting, she's been waiting
All these years
I don't blame anyone
Not even myself anymore
I just want to know
What's left when all the performing stops
What does she sound like
The one who never learned to disappear
What does she want
And have I been listening, have I ever been listening
I am what was always underneath
I am what was always underneath
