Lyrics

There was a year I didn't make plans
Past a certain point in time
Not because I thought I'd be gone
Just because the future didn't feel like mine
I went through everything expected of me
Answered when I had to, showed up, stayed
And no one would have known by looking
How far away I actually was
I'm not saying this for sympathy
I'm saying it because it's true
And because I think some people
Listening to this already know the room
The thing that kept me wasn't
One enormous revelation
It wasn't a person or a moment
Or a reason handed down
It was smaller than that
It was a song on a Tuesday
It was cold air on my face
It was coffee and it was light through glass
It was the accumulation
Of ordinary unremarkable things
That kept adding up to just enough
To make it to the next one
And I did not know at the time
That that was enough
I thought survival needed to be
More significant than that
I am not going to tell you it gets better
In the way that phrase gets used
Because some things don't get better
They just get something you can move around
But I will tell you this
The version of me that couldn't see past February
Is now someone I look back at
With something close to tenderness
She was doing everything she could
With what she had at the time
She was not failing
She was just in a room with no windows
And somehow, not heroically
Not with music swelling underneath it
But somehow, she found the door
And walked through it into this
I don't know why I'm still here
I've stopped needing to know
I'm just here
And today that's enough
