Lyrics

Ticket punched one way
Boots on gravel early dawn bleed
Mama at the door but she don't speak
Paper in his hand with a government seal says
Serve your country says this is real
Old man stare like a rusted blade
Boy don't come back the same way you came
Trainyard crying with iron lungs
Smoke in the sky like a loaded gun
Last train out hear that whistle cry
Steel wheels singing like a lullaby
Last train out
Oh a ticket carved in doubt
Ain't all turning when the last train's out
Crushed in his teeth fire in his veins
Brother to strangers and blood and names
Letters from home start fading thin
Ink turns to ghosts on paper skin
Nighttime screams in a foxhole grave
Praying to a god he forgot to save
Metal rain and the sky caves in
Don't care who you might have been
Last train out hear that whistle scream
Tracks run black through a broken dream
No way back
No conductor calling out
You're already on the last train out
Run, run, heartbeat overload
Bullets carving up the road
Mud and fire, teeth and bone
Every man fights alone
Dog tags rattling like chains of fate
Seconds ticking but it's too late
Eyes go wide in the burning field
Trigger pulled but the end's revealed
Last train out
No way back
Iron coughing on a one-way track
Stay, last train
Hear that whistle rip and shout
You're riding hard on the last train out
Come home
Roll call fades
Instrumental
End with sustained crying note
Fading into clean tone
The mud is warm where it shouldn't be
That's the first thing he notices
It clings to his fingers like it's trying to keep him here
Like the earth has hands he presses his palm down
And feels something pulse beneath it
Not a heartbeat
Just the echo of his own fading rhythm
Leaking into the ground
Smoke hangs low, thick as a curtain
Shapes move inside it or maybe they don't
He can't tell anymore
The noise of the fight is peeled away
Leaving a hollow ringing in his ears
Like a train screaming somewhere far off track
He tries to turn his head
It's heavy, everything is heavy now
There's a flash of home that cuts through the grey
A doorway, his mother standing there not crying
Just watching, waiting
He remembers the way the morning looked when he left
How the sky didn't care
A boot steps near him then another shadows pass
No one stops, no one sees him
Or maybe they do and keep moving anyway
War doesn't slow down for Ghost and he's already halfway there
The mud shifts under his cheek, it smells like iron
Like rain that forgot how to be clean
He tastes it and almost laughs
But it comes out as nothing
Then he hears it again
That whistle long low, calling to smoke parts
Just enough for him to see it
Not with his eyes
But somewhere deeper
A train waiting on a track that was never there before
No lights, no faces in the windows
Just an open door in the darkness that feels
Quiet
His hand twitches
Reaching for something he can't hold
The noise fades
The weight lifts
And for the first time since the bullet started flying
Everything finally stops
Folded flag in a widow's hand
Six men walking through foreign sand
Name carved deep in a marble line
Frozen forever at twenty-nine
Box cams home but he don't breathe
Cold black suit, quiet beneath
Train pulled in but no one's there
Just ghost riding empty hands
Last train out, laid in black
Wooden rails, no coming back
Last train, last train
The whistle washed out
He came home on the last train now
Ticket punched
Journey done
