SMILES

1 - SIGNALS

Smiles are a weapon of contact

Smiles are deadly threads

Smiles are a method of pretending

Smiles hide boredom away

2 - GRATITUDE

Do you see affection in their faces

When you've led them through the land of mazes?

Do you feel the gratitude in their hands

When you've "risked your life" to save theirs?

3 - PRIDE

Little girls will perform tonight

Excited parents jostle to get inside

Hope their daughter's going to fill their hearts with pride

Little girls are waiting for the show to start

They can feel the tension in their hearts

The lights subdue, the chatter comes apart

And finally the curtain goes up

No one can hold back their inner joy and they smile

Daddy forgets all the bad times they've had

His beautiful princess reminds him that he's glad

4 - MISERY

Feeling awfully tired this morning

I went to bed half past six

I must have been dreaming,

'cos I remember some good looking chicks

My whole life is a pigsty

There's nothing much to laugh about

So I got a stash of different smiles

that I can choose from when I'm out

5 - MALICE

He smiled at me

I got the feeling I was locked up inside his dreams

I would have left the room, but I was stunned

Stunned to death by his calmness

His pinky grey eyes and his contemptuous smile

are the last things I remember from that day

"Cause then I started screaming

and I kept screaming

NO!!!

6 - PLEASURE

A magical journey in the air

Coloured lamps everywhere

Happy children, funny gags

"Stealing" money from their parents' bags

7 - PASSION

Late one night at the Chaplin Café

The piano is playing the blue note samba

It's okay

A girl is waiting for me

at the corner of Grub Street and Drunkard Boulevard

Her smile is dirty and free

It makes the passion burn in my...whoops!

I go for a headstart

8 - FRAUD (instrumental)

9 - FACADES

Smile, though the air is filled with thunder and war machines

Smile, though your girlfriend left you behind with the flat and the marriage dreams

Smile, though the tide is high and the cream is turning sour

Smile, though your life depends on a yet undeveloped cure

Smile, though the scares from your father's violent behaviour still hurt

Smile, though your life is a mess and the thought of continuing is totally absurd

Smile, though you'd rather like to cry, cos your best friend suddenly died

Smile, where's your pride?

10 - AFFECTION

Below the apple tree

in the shade of vigorous boughs

Just the two of us

You and me

Visiting Cupid's house

Whenever I hear the voice of the wind

And whenever I feel the warmth of the sun

I smile at you,

because smiles can also embrace

if you want them to (and you know it's true)

It's true!

Lyrics by Henrik Fevre, 1991-92.
