Lyrics

First one without you and we all showed up anyway
Like showing up was something we could do to make it okay
Somebody set your place before they thought about what that meant
Sat there for a minute before anyone said anything
Somebody tried the prayer but lost it halfway through
Nobody filled the silence 'cause the silence was for you
The food was right the table was the same the house was yours
But every room had something missing standing in its doors
I kept expecting you to come around the corner any second
Kept forgetting for a moment then remembering the lesson
That forgetting is just grief finding somewhere to breathe
And remembering is the wave that brings you back to your knees
We stayed too long that night nobody wanted to be first
To leave 'cause leaving meant admitting what we knew was worst
That the house don't hold the same without the one who held it
That we only knew our family through the shape that you had built it
Empty chair at every table
Empty space nobody's named
We keep showing up 'cause that's what you would want
But nothing feels the same
Second one and half the family didn't make the drive
Told themselves they had other plans but really they just tried
To avoid the version of the table that had your seat pulled in
Like putting it away would mean admitting where we'd been
The group chat that would light up weeks before went quiet
Nobody planned the dinner nobody wanted to defy it
That unspoken thing we'd all agreed to without speaking
That maybe this year we'd just let it go without the grieving
Of a room that used to overflow now barely half capacity
And I sat there with my plate and felt the strange audacity
Of hunger at a table that was supposed to feel like home
But home had quietly become a place we visited alone
I called somebody on the drive back didn't say much
Just needed someone's voice, needed something to stay in touch
With the idea that we were still a family still a thing
That the absence of the center doesn't mean the end of everything
Empty chair at every table
Empty space nobody's named
We keep showing up 'cause that's what you would want
But nothing feels the same
Third one and I almost didn't mark it at all
Caught myself forgetting until sometime in the fall
When the light changed and my body knew before my brain
The way it always knows now every year the same
No table this time just a phone call maybe two
Someone mentioned you in passing like a thing we already knew
To carry and move around like furniture we're used to
Not the sharp thing anymore just something we've adjusted to
And I drove past the house without a reason I could name
Sat outside for longer than I'd probably ever claim
The lights were on inside somebody else's family now
Making memories in rooms we built and somewhere in the how
Of all of this I understood what loss does over time
It doesn't leave it just gets folded into the design
Of everything you are of every table that you set
You're in the way we show up when we show up
You're in that yet
The hardest part isn't the first one
Everyone prepares you for the first one
The hardest part is the one where you realize
You've stopped counting which one it is
The one where it's just life now
Just the shape of things
Just the chair that nobody sits in
That nobody mentions
That everybody sees
Empty chair at every table
Empty space we've learned to hold
We keep showing up 'cause that's what you would want
We keep showing up
We keep showing up
That's all we know
I still set a place sometimes
Don't know why
Just feels right
