Lyrics

The party was in the back but you preferred the bar up front
Where the old timers nursed their drinks in a linoleum crimson heaven
And watched your moves across the jukebox
With an approval dug from memories of their own beautiful pasts
Which palpably still last
Seemed they liked your choices too
Though when you put a dollar in that jukebox
It left little room to not know what to do
And we'd return whenever we could since it was
The closest guarantee we had to keeping us good
But that phase came to a halt the day that Curtis died
I pulled the van over and with you at my side I cried and I cried
And instead of lending me an arm you said
"Man there's something really wrong with you!"
And I said "Of course there is!"
As my tears turned to rage I smacked your pager to the ground
You opened up the door
Flipped me the bird, and took off into the night
The first time we rekindled well it must have been a year after that
It lasted just a week before some inarticulatable rule was broken
From there each pause grew longer in between
A chance encounter in a distant town
A weekend at your apartment before a hasty tongue-tied departure
Until well over a decade came to pass
Without even so much as an angry text
Then the news cut across my feed that Bill Withers had passed
I clutched my gut, took a seat, and fixated on that image of you
Glowing in the light of Frank's
Jukebox singing I'm So Tired Of Being Alone
Like a baiting mantis that eats its own
If there was a silver lining to the grief I thought
At least this would end our drought, that you'd reach out
So I walked down to the river where you used to leave me a sign
I refreshed my screen to check the line
Looked up old friends we used to share in common
Expecting you to have left them some sort of note, even if it was mean
Went to the last remaining vestige on the long since gentrified street
Ordered a glass of disgusting wine off a menu out of time
And I waited
Thought about going back to Frank's but of course
It too had been shuttered, felt relieved in a way
Walked up to Chelsea where no one looks at the walls
Afraid you'd mastered that effete art
Of avoiding any conversation with balls
Listened to Sam & Dave on repeat while I cooked a meal alone
One hand on my knife, one hand on my phone
I surrounded myself with people I love
To remind me how difficult you were
While internally anguishing over
Whether I too was better when I was awful
Ruminated on a past flawed theory of mine that used to drive you nuts
In hopes of it tickling your scalp now
But the more I ruminated the more I thought a solid one
Would have never taken us to the places that one did
I started and then I stopped to write
A song you'd have to hear so you'd have no choice but to
Face the fact that we're still here
We're still here
