Lyrics

Lockdown Hit
Yeah…
They tell you prison changes everybody…
They never tell you what it does to the officers
First day on the compound, young and green
Trying learn the difference between respect and fear
Steel doors slam, radios screaming
Every tier got demons breathing in your ear
Count time, pat searches, shake the cells
Trying survive inside a living hell
Walking chow hall watching every move
Cause tension in prison switch fast on you
Night shift coffee and stale breakroom air
Listening for fights while making rounds everywhere
Keys on my hip and a vest on my chest
Trying make it home while handling stress
Cause one wrong move or one blind spot
Could get your partner layed to rest in a box
Code alarms, lockdowns, emergency teams
Living every day on pure adrenaline
Now I still hear them gates slam shut
Still smell O.C. when the pressure bust
Still got nightmares I can't outrun
From the things I saw on May Twentieth
Cause everybody tough till lockdown hit
Till the lights go out and the doors don't click
Till you hear that radio scream "man down"
And the whole damn prison burn to the ground
We was understaffed, underpaid, overworked
Still stood tall when the whole place hurt
Yeah this badge came blood and scars
And prison leaves its mark on all of ours
Two thousand twelve, Sunday afternoon
Chief called my phone said "We need you soon"
I said "I ain't SORT." He said "That don't matter"
Could hear the fear in the background chatter
Laced my boots, grabbed my vest
Looked in the mirror, took one deep breath
Smoke in the sky when I hit them gates
Chaos spread fast, everybody too late
Hostages taken, windows shattered
Officers bleeding, nothing else mattered
My partner Cat ain't make it home
And every C.O. there still carry that stone
Same age, same race, around my age too
Truth is that day it could've been me instead of you
Worked over twenty-four trying regain control
That riot still tattooed inside my soul
Cause everybody tough till lockdown hit
Till the lights go out and the doors don't click
Till you hear that radio scream "man down"
And the whole damn prison burn to the ground
We was understaffed, underpaid, overworked
Still stood tall when the whole place hurt
Yeah this badge came blood and scars
And prison leaves its mark on all of ours
Cell extractions… shakedowns… use of force
Paperwork stacked while your mental course
COVID hit and we still showed up
Masks on our face while death rode with us
Mandatory overtime every week
No sleep, dead tired, mentally beat
Missing birthdays, holidays, family time
Felt like we was doing time for doing our job
Some officers folded, some turned cold
Some brought prison back home
But I kept walking them ranges alone
Trying not to let prison live in my soul
Then the union disappeared overnight
Now the wolves run free on every shift at night
No more bargaining, no agreement in hand
Just officers trying survive where they stand
Years passed by, stripes got earned
Hard lessons lived, hard lessons learned
Politics dirty, leadership fake
Seen good officers crack and break
Federal time now, wiser man
Still hearing radios in my head again
But maybe God got another route
Contract Specialist maybe my way out
Still… part of me stuck in them halls
Where them steel doors echo off the walls
Cause once you survive them prison nights
You never really leave that life
Everybody tough till lockdown hit
Till the lights go out and the doors don't click
Till you hear that radio scream "man down"
And the whole damn prison burn to the ground
Understaffed, underpaid, overworked
Still stood tall when the whole place hurt
Yeah this badge came blood and scars
And prison leaves its mark on all of ours
