Lyrics

Defiance was a small, dusty town
Once upon a time in the west
A tale that you've never heard
But a tale that you know nonetheless
The Sheriff was a town dude from the east
With his white suit and quicksilver speech
Who played a conniving charade
A crafstman of lies and deciet
The Sheriff ran a tight town
Called the shots and fixed the game
Through contriving and rigging and plot
Solely for power and gain
The Shackle Saloon faced the south
A perfect view of the jail
Where many an innocent man
Starved for weeks inside its cells
Inside the Shackle Saloon
Where the ladies of the night dwell
Was where Cindy the Tailor
Lived a life that did not treat her well
The Saloon was filled full of gamblers
And guitars and cigars and girls
The girsl called the Sheriff their master
Any passers-through just called him "sir"
Now Cindy was the top of the bottom
A daughter of ill repute
The men called her their one true love
The women, a prostitute
Cindy was the Sheriff's own
If she refused no doubt she'd be killed
Constantly working her own
And for the sheriff whenever she was called
ooo ooo ooo
Jasper was a gambling gunslinger
Violence and chance were his bread
The wheel of fortune never turned
For the hero of our story ahead
A merciless trouble had trailed him
Like the old hoary Serpent of Eve
Ever since Youth and Young Manhood
Thus the devil was all he could believe
Oh Jasper rolls into town
With an iron tied low on his leg
Not looking for any kind of trouble
Just a game and a girl and a bed
Inside the saloon he walks
Sheriff sees him but he's not yet upset
In the lap of a cowboy sits Cindy
Their fates sealed soon as their eyes met
Oh Jasper pretends not to see her
And approaches the clerk for a room
Purchasing himself a drink
And ascending the stairs in gloom
After washing the dust from his skin
He sat for a minute or more
When, interupting his thoughts,
A light knock came to his door
He opens the door to find Cindy
Standing out there in the hall
His tongue became tied from her beauty
He stood and did not speak at all
She says, "I've heard of your gun
And I hope that the stories are true
Because I've gotta tale
A tale to tell to you"
ooo ooo ooo
"The Sheriff rode in on a storm one day
Threatening loopholes of law
'No good deed goes unpunished in the west'
Became the Sheriff's mantra
The Sheriff oversees the town
With a cult of armed deputies
Treating all the poor townspeople
As their own personal property
The Sheriff and the Sheriff's 7 henchman
Banned all of our arms with force
Extorting the shops along mainstreet
And all of the buildings and stores
The Sheriff owns me and the girls
That work in the Shackle Saloon
Oh Jasper, I been praying so long
For someone like you."
Jasper could only stand silenced
Pondering the proper words to use
For even in the face of such beauty
Sometimes you got to refuse
"I am so sorry, darling,
But I cannot fight this fight for you.
I will be gone on the morrow.
I'm only just passing through."
Cindy's voice began to quiver,
"But it's what the Lord sent you here for."
Tears welled up in Cindy's eyes
As Jasper closed the door
He knew he should have stayed in Waco
The gambling was so easy there
Whiskey drowns a guilty conscience
And all of the thoughts you can't bear
ooo ooo ooo
Awakened from a troubled sleep
Jasper hears a crash
And the cry of a woman in need
One recalled from his troubled past
Down in the barroom below
The Sheriff had been drinking late
Slapping poor Cindy around
A visage of malice and hate
The deputy henchman stood round
Laughing in sport and in fun
The patrons could only watch
Until the Sheriff was done
The Sheriff raised a hand to deliver
A blow to Cindy's lovely face
But Jasper stood tall in the stairwell
"Don't you dare touch my sister that way!"
Jasper counted 7 henchman
And the Sheriff made an even 8
With 6 rounds packed into his sixgun
But Jasper was not afraid
Jasper did not waste a second
And so the legend has said
6 shots he fanned in an instant
The 7 henchman fell down dead
The Sheriff had no time to act
He reached for the gun in his coat
But Cindy, broken glass in hand,
Laid open the skin of his throat
The Sheriff's legs did give out
As the blood poured down onto his shirt
And with the Sheriff's own gun
She gave him no chance for last words
ooo ooo ooo
The townspeople now walk the street
No longer in fear or in shame
Praise be to their new hero
"Freedom" was the towns new name
"Oh Jasper, would you not stay,
Forever?" they asked, if he could
But Jasper chose to ramble on
Just like any rambler would
"Goodbye," he said to his sister
The lost sister that he had found
"I'm sorry I left you before,
And I'm sorry I'm leaving you now."
She watched her brother ride away
Until he was out of sight
And went back to making new clothes
That fit on people just right
