Lyrics

On Mull, where the black cliffs sleep
And silver tides roll cold and deep
The fair folk sing beneath the stone
Where no man dares to walk alone
There came a piper from the glen
With heather eyes and fearless grin
His pipes did cry through rain and foam
As moonlight led the wanderer home
The old wives warned by peat fire flame
"Inside that cave, none leave the same"
But pride and song burned in his chest
And westward still the piper pressed
The sea stood still, the night bent low
And from beneath the earth below
A thousand whispers called his name
Like ghostly winds through island rain
Oh, play lone piper deep below the hill
Where the fairy fires dance and the dead lie still
Through the hollow stone where the lost souls roam
Far from the light and the shores of home
And the pipes rang wild through the ocean cave
Like a prayer for the damned and the wandering brave
Till the music stopped in the cold black air
And silence answered everywhere
The villagers stood upon the shore
And heard his pipes forevermore
They faded slowly into stone
Like winter birds forever flown
Then from the dark, the hound returned
Its eyes with fear and spirit burned
No fur remained upon its skin
As if death itself had breathed within
No footprints marked, no final cry
Only the gulls above the sky
And hidden deep beneath the sea
The fair folk kept their mystery
Oh, play lone piper deep below the hill
Where the fairy fires dance and the dead lie still
Through the hollow stone where the lost souls roam
Far from the light and the shores of home
And the pipes rang wild through the ocean cave
Like a prayer for the damned and the wandering brave
Till the music stopped in the cold black air
And silence answered everywhere
Some say beneath the island ground
His pipes still make a mourning sound
When storm clouds gather over Mull
And midnight seas grow dark and full
The fairies dance by lantern flame
Still calling softly out his name
And sailors hear through mist and foam
A lonely tune that never comes home
Oh, play lone piper deep below the hill
Where the fairy fires dance and the dead lie still
Through the hollow stone where the lost souls roam
Far from the light and the shores of home
And the pipes ring on through the endless night
Past the veil of the living and fading light
In the cave where the old gods wait unseen
Beneath the cliffs of emerald green
On Mull, the dark cave still remains
And the piper plays beneath the rain
