Lyrics

He flew into my life, guess I was eight years old
He was the Captain, a presence big and bold
Liked Elvis and Sinatra, could hit a golf ball a mile
And he could light you up like Christmas, with that charismatic smile
Catholic school raised, rulers on his wrists
Those nuns hardened his hands, while he hardened his fists
Fought his whole life, to make one of his own
Maybe could have seen it, the seeds he'd end up sown
Divorced twice before, leaving two kids each behind
I'm sure they missed their Dad like I was missing mine
He and my Mom, they exchanged rings
A new makeshift family, trying to make the best of things
A hard but a fortunate life he lived through
Made lots of mistakes, mistakes that can't undo
What was really happening, we didn't have a clue
When he would say, this'll hurt me more, more than it hurts you
Left both times before, both in the early days
Never figuring how kids needed to be raised
But he sure did try with my brother and me
Like making us run miles at zero dark thirty
We both got better grades, ends, justifying his means
I still got shipped to the mountains
While my brother joined the Marines
Yeah, he pushed us hard, harder than he probably should
The Great Santini just trying to do good
A hard but a fortunate life he lived through
Made lots of mistakes, mistakes that can't undo
What was really happening, we didn't have a clue
When he would say, this'll hurt me more, more than it hurts you
And when I got suspended he kicked me till I bled
That Black Mariah belt of his left my ass bruised and red
I can't begin to know what was happening in his head
Guess he was trying to make a man out of, a man out of this kid
On that fateful night, sitting in a kitchen chair
Slouching and slurring, after the ambulance was there
He tried giving up with a bottle of pills
And every time I think of it, it covers me with chills
For a man once full of life that life had took its toll
Now, here he was, throwing in the towel, and his soul
For all the times he told me, "get up, boy, and fight"
Nothing would be the same, not after that night
The last things I said to him they weren't the kindest words
I yelled and I cussed, and I called him a coward
I may know now, mental illness as a threat
Still hard to forgive, and I know I can't forget
I give the Captain credit, he never tried to be my Dad
And I know he loved me, and gave me everything he had
If there's a Heaven, and he's looking down on me
I just hope he knows I loved him too, and I'm sorry
A hard but a fortunate life he lived through
Made lots of mistakes, mistakes that can't undo
What was really happening, we didn't have a clue
When he would say, this'll hurt me more, more, than it hurts you
A hard but a fortunate life he lived through
