Lyrics

There once was a town by the river
With a road that was older than stone
And a map in the hall of the elders
That had guided their fathers back home
The lines were not easy or gentle
Some climbed where the cold winds would blow
But the people all knew in the valley
That the map showed the way they should go
And the river ran
And the bell still rang
And the lanterns burned at night
The map was framed
In the elder's hall
And everyone said It's alright
Yes everyone said It's alright
Then came a man in the morning
With ink and a careful hand
He spoke of the rain and the season
Of customs that shaped the land
He said We must study the valley
The shadows the names and the time
And some of it sounded like wisdom
Till he started to move every line
And the river ran
And the bell still rang
And the lanterns burned at night
The map was framed
In the elder's hall
And everyone said It's alright
Yes everyone said It's alright
The first line moved in silence
Then the next one moved by name
Till the road upon the parchment
And the road outside weren't the same
They still kept the map in the hall
Still sang of the road as before
But the children who followed its turning
Could not find the old valley door
And the river ran
And the bell still rang
And the lanterns burned at night
The map was framed
In the elder's hall
And everyone said It's alright
Yes everyone said It's alright
Then a child at the edge of the council
Said Why do the bridges keep falling?
Why do the lost never find us?
Why does the north road keep calling?
The hall became quiet as winter
The mapmaker turned from the flame
For the map in the frame looked lovely
But the roads were no longer the same
Still the river ran
And the bell still rang
And the lanterns burned at night
The map was framed
In the elder's hall
But no one could tell left from right
No no one could tell left from right
There once was a town by the river
With a road that was older than stone
And a map that was given in mercy
To guide all the wanderers home
