Lyrics

They keep asking what went wrong with the children
Turning over every stone except the one at their feet
Saturday morning, a station, a shuttle train
Running to the gates and back again, over and over
Free to ride — and nobody calls it a ride
But I heard laughing from the front of the first car
"Here we go — hold on tight!"
The doors slid shut and the little one shouted with joy
Everybody else had a suitcase, a case, a bag on their back
Those two carried nothing, clothes clean and worn thin
They had all the time in the world
Everybody else just wanted the ride to end
"Look out there — you see it?"
And the small one pressed up against the glass
I stepped off, forgot something, doubled back
And there they were again — still going nowhere, still going fast
"You want to go home now?"
"I want to ride some more"
"More? Aren't you tired yet?"
"This is fun!"
"How fast are we going?"
"Very, very fast" — and the floor began to hum
Some children get flown across an ocean
Some get every single thing they name
Big house, bright rooms, and something still goes wrong
Money never made a morning like this one
"Where's everybody going?"
"All over the world"
Leaving, arriving, chasing the far side of the map
Those two were only riding — going nowhere, together
It cost nothing, and they made it a thrill
Something to share, just being alive in the same hour
Here was someone who chose to spend the day
Who made a plan for an ordinary Saturday
Enough of your hours, enough of your eyes
It doesn't cost a cent
It's the biggest thing there is
The train picked up speed
A hand pointed at something out the window
And the child laughed again
The answer was that simple
