Lyrics

It was twelve-oh-one AM. December twentieth, nineteen eighty-nine.
Colonel Terrell gave the order.
A diversion outside La Comandancia...
I was the lead bird, ten feet off the pavement
Driving down Avenida in the dead of the night
An A.H. 1 Cobra, running hot and heavy
Little Birds trailing in the slipstream flight
We were bringing the operators to Carcel Modelo
Touching down to block the small arms fire
I thought I knew the cost of wearing the uniform
But the price of my survival was about to get higher
How do you weigh a life in the dark?
When the rotors spin and the shadows bite?
I traded a hundred souls for a spark
And I've paid for it every sleepless night
I kept us alive when the fire rained down...
But I left my ghost in that burning town.
A boy ran out in front of the glass
Fourteen years old, with a trembling hand
He pointed a small revolver at the cockpit
Just a child making a desperate stand
Then his mother ran up from the alley behind him
I prayed to God she would drag him away
But she pulled the cord on a satchel charge
And I had a split-second choice to make
I hesitated there, frozen at the sight
Until my co-pilot screamed over the engine's whine
I opened up with the twenty mike-mike...
And erased their lives to rescue mine.
A pedal stomp and I pulled the collective hard
Burying us into the armor, red-lining the sky
We outran the blast, but the incendiary caught
And I watched the fires of El Chorrillo rise
Hundreds of civilians burned in that inferno
Just collateral damage in the devil's pact
Three birds fell that night—two crashed, one ditched—
But I was the one who kept my life intact.
How do you weigh a life in the dark?
When the rotors spin and the shadows bite?
I traded a hundred souls for a spark
And I've paid for it every sleepless night
I kept us alive when the fire rained down...
But I left my ghost in that burning town.
It’s been nearly forty years.
But I still see her face when I close my eyes.
Her hand on the cord.
The spatter of tissue in a cloud of red.
I chose to live.
But God... she still wakes me.
