Lyrics

I got tired of showing up with an open heart
To tables where no one ever planned to stay.
They learned every inch of my body,
But never the fear I carried beneath my skin.
I was always the "you're beautiful,"
Never the "please stay with me."
I was always the beginning of something
That someone else decided to end.
How many times do I have to break apart
Before I understand that no one here is searching for what I am?
Today I return to my shell.
Not because I've stopped believing in love,
But because love seems to have stopped believing in me.
I'm tired of being just a moment,
A story no one ever reads again.
While everyone else collects fleeting nights,
I'm still dreaming of waking up beside the same person.
Maybe I was born too late,
Or maybe too soon,
To find someone
Who truly wanted to stay.
I'm done waiting for another message.
I'm done asking myself what I did wrong.
I'm going back
To the mornings when my life felt simple,
To the silence I used to hate,
The same silence that, at least, never lies to me.
How ironic...
Being alone used to hurt.
Now what hurts even more
Is feeling alone while lying next to someone.
I'm sorry...
I'm sorry to the child who dreamed of a house full of laughter,
Of a quiet kind of love,
Of growing old with someone's hand in his.
I couldn't keep that promise.
And I think...
I don't have the strength
To keep searching anymore.
Today I return to my shell.
Not like someone waiting to come back out,
But like someone leaving the door open
One last time.
If someone walks in,
They'll still find a heart beating.
But if no one ever does,
I promise I'll learn
How to live with this emptiness,
Even if it never stops hurting.
Tomorrow I'll smile again at work.
I'll say that everything's fine.
I'll answer, "Thank you,"
When people tell me I look happy.
No one will ever know
That every night I still imagine
The life I never got to live.
No one will ever know
That I kept a place beside me
For someone who never came.
No one will ever know
That I stopped searching
Because one day I realized
The problem was never finding someone.
It was living with the feeling
That no matter how much of myself I gave,
I was never the place
Where someone chose to stay.
And maybe...
That's the deepest grief of all.
Not losing a love,
But realizing...
I never had the chance
To truly live one.
