Lyrics

Bedroom door is open
Haven’t been in there tonight
Kitchen light
Bare feet
Same glass of water
I’ve been carrying for an hour
Phone on the counter
Plenty of names in it
Nobody I want to wake
They all said
“Call me anytime”
And I know they meant it
That’s the worst part
Because it’s Tuesday
They’ve got work
Kids have school
And whatever this is
Can wait until morning
That’s what I tell myself
Three AM
Whole street gone quiet
Porch lights off
No cars moving
Nobody asking where I’ve been
The clock keeps changing numbers
I don’t
Everybody sleeps at 3 AM
Everybody’s somewhere
They’re supposed to be
And I’m standing in the kitchen
Trying not to make tonight
Somebody else’s problem
Everybody sleeps at 3 AM
So I tell myself
Just make it to four
Three eighteen
Opened the fridge
Just to hear something
Closed it again
Walked to the window
Checked the street
Walked back
Phone still on the counter
Picked it up once
Put it down twice
I can already hear myself saying
“Sorry, man
Didn’t mean to wake you”
So I don’t call
Funny how the mind works
When nobody else is awake
Every old mistake
Suddenly wants a meeting
Everything you should’ve done
Everything you shouldn’t have said
Every name you haven’t called
In too damn long
Nothing new
Just everything louder
The dog lifts his head
Looks at me
Puts it back down
Thirty seconds later
He’s looking again
I tell him
“Go back to sleep”
He doesn’t
He gets up
Walks into the kitchen
Stands between me
And nowhere in particular
No training
No command
Just tired eyes
And four feet on the floor
Like he’s saying
We’re still here
Everybody sleeps at 3 AM
Everybody except
The ones who can’t
The ones counting minutes
The ones making deals
With the clock
Just get to four
Then four fifteen
Then maybe five
Everybody sleeps at 3 AM
But the night
Doesn’t get to keep me
Just because nobody’s watching
I put the coffee on
Too early
Don’t care
He hears the bag open
And thinks it’s breakfast
For the first time all night
I laugh
Barely
But I do
Four twelve
Coffee tastes terrible
Dog’s chewing something
He knows he shouldn’t have
I let him
Street’s still empty
Head’s still loud
Nothing got solved
Nobody came through the door
I didn’t figure my life out
I just made it past four
Four thirty-seven
First truck goes past
Somebody starting early
Somebody going somewhere
Dog hears it too
Looks at the window
I don’t
Not this time
I just sit there
With both hands around the cup
Until it isn’t hot anymore
Five oh six
A light comes on
Across the street
Then another
Somebody starts a shower
Garage door rolls up
A car backs out
The world is coming back
One house at a time
And none of them know
Where I was an hour ago
Maybe they don’t need to
Maybe I just needed
To still be here
When they woke up
Five forty-six
Sky’s turning gray
Dog’s waiting by the door now
Tail hitting the cabinet
Same walk
Same block
Same cracked sidewalk
We’ve taken a hundred times
But this morning
I notice the cold
Notice somebody’s sprinkler
Running too early
Notice a newspaper
Landed halfway in the street
Stupid little things
Good little things
Things you don’t notice
When you’re only trying
To get through the next minute
Everybody sleeps at 3 AM
That’s alright
They don’t have to know
Every night I fight to morning
They don’t have to hear
Every thought I never said
Sometimes making it through
Doesn’t look like anything
Sometimes it’s coffee
Sometimes it’s a dog
Waiting by the door
Sometimes it’s telling yourself
Just make it to four
Six oh two
Phone buzzes
My brother
“Morning
You up?”
I look at it awhile
Then type
“Yeah”
Delete it
Call him instead
He says
“Everything good?”
I look down
Dog’s already halfway
To the door
I say
“Not really”
Then I tell him
“But I’m here”
And for now
That’s enough
Made it to morning
