Lyrics

I kept a better version of me
Upstairs behind a locked door
Was learning how to live
While I was pacing the same floor
I heard he was moving after midnight
Dragging chairs across my sleep aight
He wore my face without the damage
Spoke without rehearsing first
Never mistook being wanted
For a temporary cure for thirst
I said, "One day he'll come and save me
Once I've suffered long enough,"
So I fed the lock another year
And called the waiting love
I let tomorrow dress like mercy
Let it promise me a name
While today stood in the doorway
Holding out like a little flame
I told it, "Not yet, I'm not ready
I've still got defects to move,"
Then closed my fist around my windpipe
Just to prove I couldn't move
I thought the world had formed a jury
From the strangers in the street
Someone coughing at the crossing
Meant they'd heard what I became
Someone laughing through a window
Must have recognised my shame
I turned glances into verdicts
Turned silence into proof bitch
Built a courthouse in the ribcage
And condemned myself to truth aye
Not the truth that I was frightened
Not the truth that fear can pass
But the one where I was rotten
And the whole world smelled the gas
So I learned to walk unnoticed
Shoulders folded, footsteps small bitch
Made a talent out of leaving
Before anybody called
I mistook my disappearance
For a clever kind of peace
Kept my fingers at my collar
And complained I couldn't breathe bitch
No one knew the case against me
No one even knew my name
I was prosecutor, witness
Judge and prisoner just the same uh time
The courtroom doors were never bolted
There were exits painted green
Still I sentenced myself nightly
For a crime nobody woulda seen
There are hands around my throat tonight
Ten familiar points of blue
I blamed the room for losing oxygen
But the room was breathing too
I blamed the road, I blamed the rafters
All the years I've stumbled through
Then the mirror raised its fingers
And the fingerprints were mine all through
I thought sorrow made me special
That the wound deserved a throne
That a man becomes important
When he hurts in ways unknown
So I polished all my bruises
Kept them shining for display
Made a museum of the moments
I was begging to decay
I called misery my language
Said contentment couldn't rhyme
That a heart without a funeral
Was a heart that wasted time
I wore grief like formal clothing
Buttoned tightly to the neck
Then resented all the living
For not paying their respect
I thought healing meant betrayal
Like the past would feel ignored
Like the child I used to carry
Would be waiting at the door
Asking why I'd left without him
Why I'd let the daylight in
Why I'd washed away the evidence
Of everything they did
So I kept the old house standing
Though the roof had started falling
I kept the disconnected telephone
In case the hurt came calling though
I let the ivy take the windows
Let the mould possess the beams
Then pressed both thumbs beneath my jaw
To keep from waking from the dream uh
To keep from waking from the dream uh
Maybe pain had been my shelter
Maybe pain had been my proof
But a shelter with no doorway
Is another kind of noose
I had worshipped my confinement
Called the choking something true
As though suffering were sacred
Just because it once was usefu-
Ooh I thought love would come and finish me
Fill the rooms I wouldn't enter
That another person's heartbeat
Could become my missing centre
I thought, if somebody adored me
With a perfect, tireless grace
They could hold my head above me
They could breathe into my place
So I handed out the keys
To doors I'd nailed against myself
Then accused them when they couldn't even help
Find the light upon the shelf
I made rescuers of people
Who were trying just to stay
