Lyrics

Daddy brought him home one springtime
Said, "Boy, he'll do just fine"
But that rooster took one look at me
And drew a battle line
He had murder in his eyes
Had hate there on his beak
And every time I crossed that yard
That devil came for me
I'd hear them wings start flapping
Then I'd hear Mama yell
"Run, boy, run!"
And I was all but gone
That demon chicken came for me
Feathers flying, full of rage
Like somebody opened up the coop
And let the devil out his cage
Spurs flashing in the morning sun
Mean clear through his hide
I learned to cross that backyard
At a dead run every time
Lord, I was eight years old
But I knew evil when I'd seen it—
Murder in his eyes
And hate there on his beak
He woke up long before the sunrise
Stood there crying at the sky
Like he'd spent the whole night plotting
Different ways for me to die
I swear he crowed my name each morning
Like a threat across the dawn
And if I stepped outside that screen door
Brother, it was on
I tried a broom, I tried a bucket
Tried sneaking round the shed
That bird could smell my fear
From half a county ahead
That demon chicken came for me
Feathers flying, full of rage
Like somebody opened up the coop
And let the devil out his cage
Spurs flashing in the morning sun
Mean clear through his hide
I learned to cross that backyard
At a dead run every time
Lord, I was eight years old
But I knew evil when I'd seen it—
Murder in his eyes
And hate there on his beak
Then one day Daddy watched him
Chase me clear around the barn
Through Mama's fresh-washed laundry
And halfway through the corn
Daddy set his coffee down
Said, "Well, I've seen enough"
That rooster finally met the one man
Meaner when things got rough
I don't know what happened out behind that shed
Daddy never gave me all the details
I just know...
the next morning was peaceful
The sun came up
The birds were singing
And for the first time all summer...
none of 'em were calling my name
That demon chicken came for me
Feathers flying, full of rage
Thought he ruled that whole damn yard
Like a tyrant in a cage
He had murder in his eyes
Had hate there on his beak
But Daddy finally gave that bird
The ending he deserved from me
Mama made chicken and dumplings
Sunday afternoon
I took one bite and smiled real slow—
Revenge tastes pretty good too
That bird sure tasted good
With dumplings...
and a side
