Lyrics

John Hardy, he was a desperate man
He carried two guns every day
He shot down a man on the West Virginia Line
You ought to see John Hardy get away, Lord God
See John Hardy get away
John Hardy, he rode his horse to the ground
And then for six miles he ran
He came to the river and he jumped right in
He laid on his bosom and he swam, Lord God
He laid on his bosom and he swam
John Hardy, he came to that old state line
He said, "At last I'm free"
But a deputy stuck a gun in John Hardy's back
Said, "Johnny, come and go along with me, poor boy
Johnny, come and go along with me"
Well, they took John Hardy to the jailhouse
And they locked him in his cell
Said, "You shot down a man on the West Virginia Line
Now you'll hang and your soul's bound for hell, poor boy
You'll hang and your soul's bound for hell"
Now John Hardy, he said to the hanging judge
"I've got money to pay my bail"
But money don't pay for a murder charge
So they locked John Hardy back in jail, poor boy
They locked John Hardy back in jail
"Well, I've been to the east and I've been to the west
Been this whole world 'round
I've been to the river and I've been baptized
Now lead me to my hanging ground, Lord God
Lead me to my hanging ground"
Well, they hanged John Hardy in the morning
They hanged him up on high
And the very last words John Hardy ever said
Was, "My six shooters never told a lie, great God Almighty
Six shooters never told a lie"
