The night is almost over, I'm sat here on the ground I can't no longer stand up and greet the last ones going home With hope down in my heart I leave the land where I was born Saying fare thee well to all the ladies, friends and fellow men There is no longer place for me, it's time to leave and go We drank the parting glass but I know we'll meet again I'm going where the sun shines after the morning rain Where the wind gently whistles songs of times gone by I'm coming there, to green shamrock shore 'Twas a land of emigrants Now it's our promised land I'm coming there, to green shamrock shore A bright new life awaits for me A new hope warms my heart So I landed in Dublin city with a few pennies left I took the 41 with a huge bag on me back I had a craic at Porterhouse, enjoying the city's night With floor as a pillow I found a place to rest There were people from Poland, someone else from Spain Tourists from the USA who squander all the day Buskers, painters and fiddlers through the crowd on Grafton Street Massive sales and giant ads on Penneys' window pane I'm coming there, to green shamrock shore 'Twas a land of emigrants Now it's our promised land I'm coming there, to green shamrock shore A bright new life awaits for me A new hope warms my heart In a couple of days the world turned upside down The telly told unexpectedly that recession was begun Dublin cried silently the death of its own voice Ronnie Drew was gone in that rainy August Day For the following months I walked night and day Entering each pub, but to apply for help I searched almost everywhere but the answer was a "nay" There was no longer work for anyone out there When I went back, there was no one to wait for me All me claimed friends avoided me but I never begged their help It's easy to judge when standing on the dry ground But I can proudly say "oh shite, at least I've tried!"
