Why are we the planning committee for this birthday party again?

Because we’re Carla’s friends! It makes sense for us to plan her surprise party. We’re like the local government… you know because we’re the best people to address her needs?

  

States got their own governments

Counties, cities and towns do too

They all split up the work, the work that governments do

While states oversee a lot, when it comes to local stuff

It’s locals who know what’s up,

So local government steps up!

States have pretty full plates

Think of everything inside of their borders

They’ve got to keep ordered

Making laws and regulations

Is definitely a part of it

But that’s just the start of it

From giving tests for driver’s licenses

And making rules for businesses

Holding fair elections

And making sure your water flows

Yeah on and on it goes, (on and on it goes)

But even though states do so much

Fact is, sometimes you need a local’s touch!

States give counties and towns all kinds of help And sometimes foot the bill

And that’s great, but even still

When it comes to the details of how local areas are run It’s those who reside in it

That get to decide on it

      

Things like managing the city schools Collecting trash and recyclables

And running county libraries and parks

When it comes to that stuff

The locals know what locals need

So local government takes the lead!

No disrespect to state government

Led by the governor

Who’s like a state’s president

The state’s got lawmakers too

And a state constitution

That the counties and cities must obey

But for managing details day-to-day,

Local government steps up

(From ice and snow removal)

’Cause it’s the locals who know what’s up

(To new construction approval)

And while local and state governments got to abide by

The US law and Constitution,

Who would deny

That when it comes to local stuff

It’s the locals...who know what’s up!
