歌词
[Verse 1]
Yo, growing up in the Virgin Islands
You know, it's real reggae driven, real calypso driven
But believe it or not, you know
Me and my brother, we grew up listening to hip-hop music
Like, our parents was like the cool kids
Like, they loved hip-hop music
And you know, we ain't never really wanted to rap or nothing
Until the Fugees came out
[Verse 2]
That's when it all changed
See, that's was the first time we wanted to get on stage
I was nervous, my brother wasn't afraid
We both was at a very young age
Mom and Dad worked hard for that five dollars an hour minimum wage
They treated our folks like they were slaves
But they did whatever they had to to keep food on the plate
So we made a promise that somehow, some way
We was gon' make it up out of this ghetto one day
Maybe 'cause we were locals
Probably why promoters felt like we didn't deserve to get paid
We were loved by some, hated by many
Years passed growing up, now we just met Benny
Fan base started growing, still wasn't making a penny
That's not even half a mile in my shoes
We became the biggest group while we were still only in high school
But we ain't settled, so right after we graduated, we moved
[Verse 3]
All we've ever wanted to do was get to a better tomorrow
So much in our hearts to prove to get to a better tomorrow
[Verse 4]
So look, at this point, we like the biggest group in the Virgin Islands
And I remember, we left with egos
Like we really thought we was gon' move to the States
And we was 'bout to blow up
And of course, you know, it ain't happen like that
So I remember my brother got his ticket, he left
I had a buddy pass, lost my buddy pass
My mama took her last money and got me that plane ticket
[Verse 5]
So now, we in the MIA
Shout out to my cousin Oshannah for giving us a place to stay
My homie, Verse, stayed right around the corner with his moms
My uncle Trent stayed twenty minutes away
Now me, my brother, and Verse was running through the streets of Miami
Grinding, seeing as though we couldn't get work
Then a radio battle rap show with Big Lip and Super Cindy
Was the only way that we got heard
See, we skipped college, ain't with that blue collar
Was only chasing our dreams, ain't never chased dollars
And we was on fire when we left St. Thomas
Went to Miami thinking we was gon' get more hotter
But that didn't happen at all, we knew that we needed to leave
And it was between Atlanta and New York
Then our tickets got bought to come to the A to rock a show
If that wasn't a sign, I don't know what it was
So they paid us 350 to perform in the club
So we packed up our bags like, here we come
And we were fresh out of high school, still very young
But this was our dream, to some, we were dumb
[Verse 6]
All we've ever wanted to do was get to a better tomorrow
So much in our hearts to prove to get to a better tomorrow
[Verse 7]
All right, so I know y'all heard me mention Benny name on the first verse
And for those who don't know, Benny is Akon's DJ
DJ Benny D
And you know, we all came up together in the Virgin Islands
Tryna chase this dream
And at this point now, we're all together in the States, like, yo
Man, we, we, we gotta really go hard, or go home
'Cause this is it right here
[Verse 8]
So we went to Atlanta and decided we wasn't gon' leave
With 20 dollars in the pocket of some old jeans
Came across a few salesmen that sold dreams
But we wasn't gon' quit, uh-uh, by no means
We started meeting with labels and we were laughed at
Like you from an island tryna rap, go home please
Started doing talent shows to win money
Just to keep the lights on and bring home a lil' groceries
Buzz started growing
Atlanta started showing mad love, so we just kept on going
Deals on the table, now Akon blowing up
And hearing 'bout us from everybody who know him
Did the deal with Konvict, then Losin' It dropped
Still here, standing even after Losin' It flopped
They wanted us to sing, no rapping, straight pop
That's just some of the reasons why that album ain't drop
And I ain't tryna get props, all I want is my shot
Our chance to blow and probably make it to the top
And at least I can say that we tried if we failed
Plus the fans ain't never cared 'bout first week sales
[Verse 9]
All we've ever wanted to do was get to a better tomorrow
So much in our hearts to prove to get to a better tomorrow
[Verse 10]
All right, so there's still a few pieces that I missed
So when we first moved to Atlanta
You know, we was 'bout to sign to Organized Noize
And I just gotta shout out to the homies, Rico, Wade, and Ray
Because, you know, they embraced us and showed us mad love
For real, you know, we represent Second Generation
Dungeon Family, all day
And then, uh, you know, so, that didn't really work out
And then we just got back on our talent show grind
And, like, straight up
We was just doing talent shows because we know that you could win money
And we just was like
Yo, this is how we gon' pay our bills, how we gon' survive
And we started winning so much that they told us
We couldn't compete no more
And we was like, damn
All right now, we gotta try to figure something else out
And um, you know, everything didn't really start changing for us
Till we met our manager, Ray Daniels
And he was a young, hungry, up and coming **** from Atlanta
Just, you know, tryna make it, same way we was, so
You know something, I'ma let my brother come in here
And finish out the rest of the story
[Verse 11]
Yeah, so what my brother forgot to mention
I gotta go back a little bit, as when we first got to Atlanta
We didn't really have no place to live
So, you know what I'm saying? We kinda was like
Sleeping on the MARTA train and shit
And we would, you know, stay there for a couple days or whatever
And then we got stay in a studio, and we would sleep there on a couch
Like, my head on one end, his head on the other end
You know what I'm saying?
And we would take showers in the bathroom, in the sink
You know what I'm saying?
When we, when we could, when we had to get fresh and shit
'Cause we lived in a studio
Now we can fast forward to later on
We met these producers that we were working with
And we was working on an album
And something happened to where we had to move back to St. Thomas
[Verse 12]
Now when we left St. Thomas, we was popping, we was like, big
And still thought of as a big deal
And had to move back to St. Thomas 'cause my daughter was born
And I was broke, and I ain't had nothing
You know what I'm saying?
My baby mama saying, like, "****, you ain't really shit 'cause you don't help out"
And I was like, damn, man, like I got
Like what am I gonna do? Like, all I've ever been good at is music
Like, you know, we didn't go to college
We, we just was singing
So we moved back to St. Thomas, man, and we got jobs at the ice cream shop
Now embarrassed as hell that we gotta work at the ice cream shop
'Cause people coming in there, still tryna take pictures
Like, "Yo, what happened to y'all? What y'all doing?
Like, you know, I thought y'all was doing music in the States, like
Y'all was 'bout to be big time"
And we was like, "Uh, man, you know, we just grinding"
[Verse 13]
So we stayed there for six months and saved money and came back to Atlanta
Like, yo, bam, got our own apartment
And you know, we paid six months rent in advance
We was like, yo, in six months, we 'bout to take over
Well, that didn't work out
You know what I'm saying? So
Now we hooking up with Ray
But we wanna work with Ray, and Ray wanna work with us
But everybody telling us not to work with Ray
And everybody telling Ray not to work with us
So one day, we was just like
Eh, fuck it, man, we been friends before music, ****
We gon' work together
And you know, Ray would just take us around the city
You know what I'm saying? In his black Tahoe
And be like, yo, man, just give the guys five minutes, then go
[Verse 14]
Man, we heard every negative thing you can hear about a artist
About ourselves
And Ray was like, "Man, don't listen to them ****, man
Y'all some of the most talented people I ever met"
So we just grinding
And I quit my job at Party City, just randomly one day
And, um, started going to the studio every day, like
In there, my brother kept his job
Anyway, while we in there now, I wrote four hundred songs
We only sold one, Music for Love for Mario
So when we start selling songs to songwriters
Me and my brother's like, oh, shit
So now everybody's coming, you know
We got publishers coming, now people tryna sign us as artists
We doing talent shows, we got Atlanta rocking
You know, it's turning around
[Verse 15]
So we did our deal with Konvict Music
You know what I mean? And then we signed to Interscope Records
So, we was there for four years, finally got off
And then, you know, at one point, you know
Ray just came and said, "I know this gon' be drastic, man
But y'all should just change y'all name"
So we changed our name to Planet Six
And put out like, two independent, free albums
The American Dream and the American Nightmare, you now what I'm saying?
You could still find those online if you wanna go check 'em out
But we was getting so much leaks from song writing
It would be pop songs, R&B songs, reggae songs
Everybody's like, "Yo, what, what the, what the fuck is these **** on?"
It was so confusing, so we was like
Yo, let's try something different
[Verse 16]
And when that didn't work, or didn't really get us where we felt we wanted to get
Ray was like, "Look, man, I think y'all should just stop being artists, man
And focus on writing, man
That's how we paying our bills, that's how we taking care of our family
I think y'all should just say fuck it"
And we was like, yeah? We was like, cool, man, like shit
Let's just write songs
And we just started writing, you know what I'm saying?
And this, we just went crazy, like
Pour It Up, Rihanna
We Can't Stop, Miley Cyrus
Shower, Becky G
Like, like I Don't Mind, Usher
Like we was just going crazy, only making
We was going crazy, like, on the writing
And this one, uh, A&R, Chris Anokute
And he was just like, "Yo, man, y'all ever work with Doctor Lou?"
We was like, "Nah"
He was like, "Man, if y'all got with Lou, y'all would be outta here"
And we had another mutual friend named, Rue Chambers
Because they set up a meeting with us with Lou
And it was just like, Rue was like, "Yo, oh, you 'bout to work with Rock City?
Oh my god, yo, on they artist shit, right?"
Luke was like, "They artists? What?
I mean, if you like they writing, bro, they artist shit is way better"
Wow, you know what I mean?
So we met with Lou, we got in on working on Becky G
Latin sister from another mister
And while working on that, like, swear to God
Like just in the middle of working on all of that
Luke just says, "Yo, y'all wanna work on some music for y'alls self?"
