When I was young I rode through Osage county
On a pretty fine pony both stubborn and old
We tread through the hills on a wind out of nowhere
Through creeks and pastures for seven long days
There was a girl both pretty and nervous
Who looked a bit shaken on the pony she road
He was spitting and stirring up dirt like a heathen
Took off like a demon was chasing his soul
Before we knew it
That pony done threw her
Out into the rocks and the dirt
To my surprise she was doing just fine
So we rode
Down the road
On a week long memory Osage county trail ride
When night came upon us
Johnny lit up a fire
And spun us a tale of his hard living days
He was rough cut and rugged
Took a bullet in Dodge City
Gut shot and bloody
He stayed through the pain
Funny that cowboy
Didn't know who he'd shot
And Johnny got up from the dirt
Pulled out his pistol
And let out a pillar of smoke
So it goes

And I'll thank my mother
For taking me riding that week
As we set out to see
