This Old Hat

Hanging by the doorway

The working day is done

Been out drafting cattle

The dust the heat n sun

The stitching in the front

Might give it one more year

But it’s still here

This hat was my grandad’s

A horseman of renown

I saw him use it

To pat the breakers down

It’s in every photograph of him

With all our kin

Camping out at Braunstone

On the northern line

I think of what this old hat saw

Before it became mine

But it’s journey isn’t over

Bouncing round the yard

And catch the morning star

And these days when I screw down this old brim
