To which I don't have an answer

And your velvet smile will only get you part of the way

When your burden of proof is yours to show

and you're carried away by the undertow

Then your day turns black and everybody's gesture is an attack

on your soul and your senses

Don't you know in time that they'll all forget

how you pirouette, that we can turn on a dime

And for crying out loud, it's clear, some are OK, some not OK

And all of us burning slow, we live and die by the flame

There's no other way it'll ever roll

The Xs and Ys and the lines in the laminar flow

that carry the family name

And all of things you will ever know

We're stuck in the fray with danger only ever seconds away

on the road to Damascus

At least we've learned that life yields its greatest return

on foot of small advances

So what I'm trying to say is

what you have may matter more than what you're after

All of us burning slow and no-one can see in the round

A scratch on the edge of a grain of sand

The Xs and Ys and the lines in the turbulent flow

it's not so hard to explain
