Take a Picture

Upstairs from me

Their dog keeps me awake

Crying day and night

For both of our sakes

‘Cause time has caught up

And distractions have past

And the emptiness left

Is going nowhere fast

But sleeping can wait

I’m just gonna wake

Without you again

With you out of sight

I went out of my mind

Even though I know

That it’s not the first time

You may not have been here

But you were not a ghost

Still I went and forgot

What matters the most

In the light of day

You know truth, you know lies

No one else to blame

Nowhere left to hide

All the extra space I’ve got now

In the closets and the drawers

Or the strands of hair I find

In awkward reaches of the floors

Or your name in mouths of others

In conversations overheard

I’m sure they’re not aware

That there’s such power in that word

Take a picture

Take it with my eyes

Soon all that remains here

Will wash out with the tide

And there’ll be a day when

All the tears are cried

So let’s take a picture

And frame this goodbye
