Hummingbird Lanai

So here am I, on the Hummingbird Lanai  

Waiting for someone new to come along  

For each of us, at best, has finally come to rest  

Have finally found a coda to our song  

  

Destiny has never seen us fly  

Destiny has only heard us say goodbye  

  

She was a Filipina waitress who couldn't hide the memories in her eyes  

He was an over-the-hill casino cowboy who couldn't stop the years from rolling by   

At the Flamingo Hotel was a wishing well  

Where you could win or lose or maybe only break your heart   

And by and by, the world's a Lanai, full of places and faces from the past  

And Bebe standin' there, sparklin' eyes and coal-black hair  

And a smile that wonders if love will ever last  

  

Destiny has never seen us fly

So here am I, on the Hummingbird Lanai  

Waiting to try, waiting to love or die  

And counting the pigeons in the sky   

Until they fly away
