At 17, I got my first pay cheque to cash

Wasn't much, but it was more than I ever had

It was burning a hole in my pocket

Dad said, "Don't spend it just 'cause you got it"

It took every ounce of will for me to make it last

An old dog teaching me new tricks ever made much sense

But I've been so hard-headed on learning the hard way ever since he said

"You could be the first to make a plan

But understand that it might change

You can get the truck to match the house

Somebody else'll change the paint

Don't think you ain't on borrowed time

'Cause you only get one go at life

Pump the brakes before He takes you back

And if you're losing track of days, you're goin' way too fast

'Cause it ain't a race to Heaven

So I hope you make it last"

At 23, I heard the first "I love you" back

Ever felt a feeling quite like that

Day one of forever with her

Momma told me to take a picture to make it last

Now, that's the only thing left of you I have

And you could be the first to make a plan

But understand that it might change

You can get the truck to match the house

Somebody else'll change the paint

Don't think you ain't on borrowed time

'Cause you only get one go at life

Pump the brakes before He takes you back

And if you're losing track of days, you're goin' way too fast

'Cause it ain't a race to Heaven

So I hope you make it last

I hope you don't beat your buddies to those gates

But if you do, there's no room for regrets in that suitcase

And you could be the first to make a plan

But understand that it might change

You can get the truck to match the house

Somebody else'll change the paint

Don't think you ain't on borrowed time

'Cause you only get one go at life

Pump the brakes before He takes you back

And if you're losing track of days, you're goin' way too fast

'Cause it ain't a race to Heaven

So I hope you make it last
