Ten years in the blink of an eye

It all goes by pretty fast

Mr. B told me to take it in

but instead I ditched out of class

Thought I was invincible but now I surely see

All the bills Piling up

there's one place I'd rather be

So I'm on my way, to my hometown

I was captain of the football team

And she was the homecoming queen

My life was everything I'd want it to be

Scored the winning touchdown

under Friday night lights

And we were state champs a second year straight

That team was like my second family

Those were the Best Years of my life

Took a walk down to that Ol field

It felt just like yesterday

I walked all those hundred yards

Counting the years I let get away

I heard a voice from across the field say

Superstar, how ya been?

Are you just stopping by?

Or are you here to stay?

I said I'm not sure, but ill let you know

So I walked down the hall to my old shop class

Along the way I passed that Ol trophy case

Holding the game ball I carried across that line

Then I got to the door and looked through the glass

And coach was still there, kicking ass

When I walked in he could hardly believe his eyes

I said Mr. B, you were right

Those were the Best Years

Yeah your hopes and dreams are so beautiful

but sometimes you just gotta let some go

and be happy for the ones that you got left

Then coach said son you plan on sticking around?

His assistant moved to a rival town

and he'd love to have me back with him on that field

Where the memories all come running back

God I love the smell of that grass

and how being part of that team made me feel
