Dead of the night when the prayer group was gone

Mum and my sisters all blissful at feather

Candlewick swaddled my golden wee brother

Dad's across town tonight, fixing The Mirror

Shaking his head at a richer man's grammar

Swerving the creakers, I slide to the stairs

Tighten my dressing gown

Mutter a Mary

Then I lean forward and step into the air

Fireflies rise

Spiralling up till we blanket the skies

Every neighbourhood's sleepy wee dreamers

Over the hills at the edge of my knowledge

Skimming the breakers, deft as a petrel

Holcombe and Pendle, Nelson and Colne

Follow the landing lights guiding me home

The house with the stair where I step into the air
