As a young girl

Mama told me that love is compromise

It was something I found hard to comprehend

As I watched her sense of self chip away

With each compromise she made

In the namesake of peace

People are made different

Aren't they, aren't we?

Yet life suggests we find a harmony with our counterparts

A synchronicity that can otherwise be attained

With pure grit and spartan endurance

None of it sounded appealing to me of course

As I watched the philosophy play out

For the people before me
