Somewhere in the panhandle of Texas

On a midnight ride, just me and my old man

We finally found a few long-lost connections

And we learned sometimes a bridge you burn still stands

We talked about our old friends and our exes

And agreed we both had dreams that just need plans

I thanked him for the tough love and the lessons

And he finally admitted I'm a man

Lord, I'd love to take that ride again

When the future's too far for the headlights

And the rearview's too dark for looking back

When all you got in your life

Is the glow of those dashboard lights

And whoever's riding with you in that cab

You really get to know what's going on in someone's head

On a long ride in a short bed

I guess that's why I love a late-night highway

When there's hardly any other cars at all

Just because there's no one riding shotgun

That don't mean that I can't have a talk

Or you may say I'm talkin' to myself

I don't know if it's crazy or holy, hell, it may be

All I know for sure
