We left our home and the friends we knew

On the banks of the Kankakee

And we headed west where the land was cheap

The road was long and the way was hard

And our Oxen, we lost three

But we took no rest 'till we reached the place

And our house from the Kansas sod

The closest town was a week away

And the nearest friend was God

We plowed by day and we prayed by night

For the rain and a gentle spring

But the frost came first

And it took the wheat

And wind began to sing

Then my man, he heard of a job in town

Said he'd be gone 'bout a month or so

But he never did come back
