The Black Dog

In twists and curls, the sea mist swirls

And blinds you through the night

You only hear the crashing waves

That at your feet foam white

And all along the stormy coast

Above the screaming gale

The howl of Shuck the phantom dog

Strikes terror through the vale

So take this warning by me

If the black dog cross your eye

For if you should dare to tell the tale

You surely then will die

'Tis said he came long years ago

With Vikings from the sea

And still he haunts the lonely paths

Across the eastern lea

From Blythburgh church to Overstrand

His name is held in fear

From Bungay up to Coltishall

Perchance you'll see or hear

So take this warning by me

With saucer eyes that glow like coals

And shaggy fur so black

And claws that strike sharp quickly

If you dare to turn your back

And many tales are told of bridges

Churchyards and the sea

The phantom dog that travellers

All should never want to meet
