Artist Biography
Sollie “Tex” Williams (who was not from Texas but from Illinois) started out as a singer with Spade Cooley's band before striking out on his own in the mid-1940s. As a Western Swing singer/bandleader, Williams took his Western Caravan to crossover success in 1947 with the Merle Travis-penned “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette).” Williams and his band made several film forays as well, appearing in a series of musical shorts. Williams never matched his mid-'40s success again, but he kept working for decades. He died in 1985.
