Rock band Elbow began as a Sly Stone-influenced funk act called Soft, before deciding to change their name and take musical cues from The Velvet Underground, Radiohead, and U2.
â David Bowieâs Hunky Dory and Joni Mitchellâs For the Roses are two of Elbow frontman Guy Garveyâs favorite albums from childhood.
â Elbow has had three consecutive No. 1 UK albums: 2014âs The Take Off and Landing of Everything, 2017âs Little Fictions, and 2019âs Giants of All Sizes.
â Velvet Underground cofounder John Cale declared Elbowâs âSwitching Offâ to be one of his âdesert island discsââa compliment Garvey called âone of the greatest moments of my life.â
â The band won Britainâs Mercury Prize for 2008âs The Seldom Seen Kid, which has sold more than 1 million copies.
â In 2011, âOne Day Like Thisâ was ranked No. 41 on NMEâs list of the 150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years.
â Garvey was commissioned by the BBC to write âFirst Steps,â the theme song for the networkâs coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
