All the drama of the silver screen has nothing on Thirty Seconds to Mars’ visceral alt-rock. It helps that actor/vocal powerhouse Jared Leto is the intrepid frontman, guiding the band’s journey through prog, metal, and electronic-infused concepts with the help of his older brother and drummer, Shannon, both of whom have remained the core of the band since launching in L.A. in 1998. Their 2002 self-titled debut showed off the pair’s ambitions with its spacey alt-metal attacks, but bringing on guitarist/keyboardist Tomo Miličević and bassist Matt Wachter helped them realize their stadium potential on 2005’s mega-successful A Beautiful Lie. Touring for 2009’s synth-rock epic This Is War, they set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during an album cycle, and their next two albums—2013’s LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS and 2018’s AMERICA—found them balancing conceptual art-rock with electro-pop precision. With every new chapter, the Leto brothers continue to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
