The Pond

"Her scarf didn't cover her neck It only attempted at her stain She held the keys to the cabin And she keeps them, to keep me safe" That last night spent on the pull out Waking up to fuel the flame We saw and we slept But we were restless anyway You tried to boil the river With an old kettle from the sink It got hot But we never heard it scream We locked us in, locked the land But the doors kept us in I was and I'm pregnable An ordinary man And, this pond will consume me Now we're back in the present We can't hide for long Just pop your collar up We ain't did nothin wrong We need to hope for the future And know about the past Before we make up our minds With what we know is gonna last We drove back to town No radio, no words The snow spoke for us, honey And the pain spoke from the terms To deny is to refute That today will be gone And so we will with it But tomorrow will come And, I wish this pond would consume me You bid me adieu And I say to you goodbye My love will last forever But your memories will die I'll recall what you said The only beauty from that night "If the moon could tell us something It would say that we were right" Why do you feel so ashamed I'm the one so scared to leave Cause I marked you with my name When we were scared to see But we know that we die So if we're gonna sleep off our days Let's just do it with our pride Cause it don't matter anyway And, this pond has consumed me
