The muddy-beige river

Crosses and curves,

Fish gaze in resignation

At the joyful fisherman.

We are vast and mute,

Lying at your feet,

Underwater we dream damp dreams,

While god watches from everywhere.

He strokes us, feeds us by hand,

Calls us by name,

Says that for such submission

His kingdom will be ours.

And when we suddenly face death,

We don’t count our losses,

Because only the most beloved children

Are offered in sacrifice.
