Despite releasing only two albums, Joy Division's haunting melodies and ominous synths helped to usher in the post-punk movement of the late ‘70s. The band's anguished tunes were carried to their zenith by vocalist Ian Curtis, whose tortured lyrics consistently revolved around themes of darkness, failure, and pain. It would be practically unthinkable to imagine The Cure's gloomy pop or Radiohead's emotional epics without the influence of Joy Division. More than three decades after Curtis' tragic suicide, the band's limited catalog continues to attract newer bands like Foals, Interpol, and Editors.
