That’s certainly true of his work with The Clash, which drew on upbeat, blues-inspired ’50s rock ’n’ rollers like Bo Diddley and the country outlaw ferocity of Johnny Cash. With his later group The Mescaleros, he expanded this foundation, weaving in rhythms from reggae and Congolese legends Thu Zahina.
