The brain makes a den for relationships forged

in those formative years when you feel most alone

and in need of loving company that mimics a family

I guess that’s why it’s been so hard to let go

So what is there to miss?

of things I’d been saying you’d suddenly claim

as your fresh realization

egocentric sensitivity

I mistook for empathy

The fact that you’d rather

Let things fall apart as if I meant nothing than actually listen or try making amends

And this rift has turned into a cliff side

And my ear has been pressed to the wind

Since I heard you’d been reflecting

And I was just so curious

But I’d rather debate the devil

Than his devoted advocate

and I tried to leave the door open

but you slammed it and busted my lip

And I don’t want to be the one who abandons

And it rots my insides holding onto resentments

But you can’t do me wrong and gloss it all over

you can’t be a friend and not say you’re sorry

You can’t take what’s mine and pretend that we’re sharing

And the few who are choosing who’s right and who’s boring

whose coattails to ride and who’s the biggest threat to the lie that you’re writing
