Lyrics

I've spent years fighting shadows that look a lot like my reflection.
The things I said, the things I did.
The nights I shut down when I should have opened up.
I used to replay every moment like a punishment I thought I deserved—
The tears I caused, the chances I wasted,
The love I didn't know how to hold until it slipped through my hands.
People say time heals everything.
But time doesn't fix what you refuse to face.
And for the longest time, I couldn't look myself in the eye
Without feeling the weight of who I wasn't.
But the truth is, I'm tired of carrying versions of myself
I can't go back and save.
Maybe the only way forward is learning to stay
When I want to run.
I'm learning how to live with me—
Not the perfect man I tried to be,
Not the broken one I feel I was,
But the one in the middle, doing his best
To put the past down without pretending it didn't matter.
Maybe forgiveness is letting myself off the hook.
Maybe it's letting myself move on.
I apologize in my head for things I'll never get to fix.
But apologies can't rewrite history,
And regret doesn't heal what honesty can.
I'm starting to understand why I pulled away,
Why I shut down, why I mistook silence, strength, and distance for protection.
I wasn't trying to hurt anyone.
I was just trying to survive myself.
Maybe that doesn't excuse anything,
But maybe it explains enough to let me breathe.
I'm not the same man I was back then,
And that has to count for something.
Some wounds don't come from what others did.
They come from what we did to ourselves
By believing we didn't deserve to do better.
I'm learning how to live with me—
To give myself permission to grow, to fail and try again
Without carrying shame as proof that I care.
Maybe forgiveness isn't forgetting.
Maybe it's accepting that who I was isn't who I'm becoming.
I won't pretend healing is easy.
Some days I still feel like the villain in stories I never meant to write.
Some days I wish I could trade memories for second chances.
But I'm done punishing myself for things I've already outgrown.
I'm done letting guilt decide who I get to be next.
If I can forgive others for being human,
I can learn to forgive myself, too.
So here I am—not fixed, not finished, but trying.
Trying to be softer with the parts of me that hurt
And gentler with the parts that still remember.
I'm learning how to live with me
One breath, one truth, one forgiven mistake at a time.
And maybe that's the first time I've ever felt free, Sam.
