Lyrics

The serpent spoke beside the tree,
“Has God said you must not eat?”
He said my eyes would open wide,
That I would know what He keeps.
I saw the fruit, it looked so good,
Desire rose in me.
I took and ate, then gave to you,
From the forbidden tree.
He said that we would surely die,
We chose another voice.
One simple word we pushed aside,
One simple, fatal choice.
We heard You walking in the garden,
In the cool of day.
The voice that once was joy to us
Now made us run away.
“Where are you?” You called our name,
Though nothing was unknown.
We hid among the trees in fear,
Afraid to be shown.
You gave the fruit into my hand,
And I received it too.
The Lord had spoken this command,
I knew His word was true.
My eyes were opened, shame rushed in,
We saw that we were bare.
We stitched the leaves together fast,
As if that fixed it there.
The woman that You gave to me
She gave the fruit, I ate.
We shifted blame from heart to heart,
But still we faced our state.
We heard You walking in the garden,
In the cool of day.
The voice that once was joy to us
Now made us run away.
“Where are you?” You called our name,
Your question filled the air.
Not seeking ground beneath our feet,
But hearts that hid in fear.
The serpent will crawl upon the ground,
The woman feel the pain.
The man will labor from the soil,
By sweat he’ll eat his grain.
The garden closed, a sword was set,
No hand could reach that tree.
Yet You made garments for our shame
Before You sent us free.
From one man sin had entered in,
And death through sin began.
But even there a promise spoke
Of hope for fallen man.
We heard Your voice…
And everything had changed.
The garden closed behind our steps,
But still You called our name.
