we climb to 30.000 feet

and I might say something witty

but instead I say “that pretty high”

and she smiles uneasily

and so we’re off to a bumpy start

I am fiddling with my safety card

and wondering how

while staring down at the steppe

she studies archeology

and I can feel the ice melt as we unbuckle our seatbelts

and we talk finally

and so we start off at erosion

work our way up to emotions

lose all notion of time
