Lyrics

There's a Benjamin plant
By the window
It's trunk twisted together
Like somebody braided it
Years ago
The leaves don't seem bothered
They keep pushing out
New growth
Every few weeks
Glossy leaves
Pressing against the glass
Faster every spring
Sometimes in the afternoon
When the light hits it sideways
The shadows look separate
Even when the trunk isn't
It didn't choose that shape
At least I don't think it did
Somebody guided it
Bent it
Tied it
Patiently
Until it became
Something pleasing
To look at
There used to be a ribbon
On one of the branches
Or maybe I'm remembering
A different plant
When I was little
I hated having my hair braided
My mother would pull too hard
And I'd sit there
Quietly angry
Watching dust float
Through the sunlight
Trying not to move
A braid can come undone
Mine always did
But the Benjamin stays that way
Year after year
And I wonder
If it's trapped
Or if it stopped noticing
The difference
Some mornings
I pass by it
Without really seeing it
Then suddenly
It feels familiar
In the way old scars do
Not painful
Just present
Maybe it doesn't dream
Of growing straight
The leaves certainly don't
They keep arriving
Bright and unapologetic
As though the whole point
Was simply to grow
Maybe it doesn't dream
At all
Maybe it wakes up
To the same sunlight
The same window
The same room
And calls that enough
Or maybe enough
Is something that happens
After a long time
A braid can come undone
Mine always did
But the Benjamin stays that way
Year after year
And I can't decide
If I should pity it
Or envy it
Sometimes I spend whole days
Trying to untangle myself
Old memories
Old fears
Old promises
A name written
On a receipt
I kept for no reason
The plant just grows
One new leaf after another
Without asking questions
A braid can come undone
If you pull at it
But some things
Become their shape
Slowly
So slowly
Nobody notices
Until it's too late
To call it a cage
Or a choice
The Benjamin stands
Quiet by the window
It's leaves catching light
Like they're celebrating something
The glass reflects us together
And I still don't know
Which of us is freer
