Lyrics

There are places
Nobody I know
Has ever seen
Or maybe they have
And simply
Never talked about them
Blank spaces
Always pulled at me
Like they were
Keeping a secret
I used to think
If I kept moving
I'd understand
The world better
In the hills
Of Laos
A family invited me
To sit
We ate sticky rice
Around a fire
Someone poured me
Something strong
Everyone laughed
At something
I never understood
I laughed too
Somehow
It was enough
I wanted
Borders
To become stories
Names
To become faces
Just for a while
Every place I reached
Stopped being
Just a name
Maybe that's
What travelling does
Piece by piece
The world
Starts looking
Less distant
Not every day
Was kind
Once in Laos
A policeman
Raised his gun
Toward my chest
Nobody shouted
Nobody moved
A few words
Passed between
People around me
Then he lowered it
I kept walking
But not very far
Before I noticed
My hands
Were shaking
In northern Thailand
A pack of wild dogs
Started closing in
I remember thinking
Don't run
Then a boy
Walked out
Carrying
An old rifle
One shout
The dogs disappeared
Before I found
Any words
He smiled
Turned around
And left
Amsterdam
Looked almost unreal
In the evening
The canals
Held the light
Long after
The sun was gone
Nepal surprised me
The mountains
Were so close
The sky
Felt smaller
Than it did
Back home
After a while
Countries
Started blending together
But people didn't
I can't remember
Every name
Or every town
But I still remember
Who shared
Their food
Who helped
When they didn't have to
I used to think
The rarest places
Were somewhere
Beyond the next border
Now
I'm not so sure
Sometimes
It's enough
To notice
Who's already here
Maybe
That's harder
Than buying
Another ticket
There are still
Unmapped places
Out there
And I still
Want to see them
Maybe tomorrow
I'll start walking
Again.
